Remi Chian Pays It Forward Through Volunteering
When Remi Chian registered to run the MLB All-Star 5K & Fun Run Benefiting Sandy Relief in July 2013, he decided to look into volunteering opportunities with NYRR as well. “I did not realize then the journey I was about to embark on or the life transformation I was to experience,” he says.
He first volunteered as a safety marshal at the Marathon Opening Ceremony Presented by United Airlines in November, 2013, and would then log an astounding 183 volunteer hours in 2014.
Chian says that his favorite volunteer roles are ones in which he is able to interact with runners. As he prepared to volunteer for Marathon Week in 2014, he learned greetings in several different languages, so he could wish international visitors and runners good luck.
As a runner himself, Chian volunteers as a way to give back to the running community. “I know quite well that there will be many occasions where our roles will be reversed, so this is also my way to pay it forward,” he says. “I feel not only honored, but also fortunate to be a part of this special group.”
Looking back on his past volunteer roles, and with many more volunteer hours ahead, Chian is proud to say, “Through my volunteering experiences, I learned that there are so many opportunities to positively affect others, and in turn find yourself in a special place.”
