Joan Innocent Turned a Life Long Love of the Outdoors into Volunteerism
Growing up on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Joan Innocent enjoyed outdoor activities such as hiking, sports, and travelling. She moved to the Bronx nearly 20 years ago and volunteered with a few organizations.
In 2009, a friend who had volunteered with a frequent NYRR volunteer, Eddie Vasquez, invited Joan to volunteer with NYRR.
“We both signed up as part of the race amenities group,” Joan recalls. “Later on, we volunteered in HeatSheets and other sections.”
She kept signing up to volunteer wherever she was needed. “I enjoyed volunteering in all the sections, because they afforded me opportunities to meet and see most of the runners,” Joan says. She’s now a Volunteer Leader.
“As a Volunteer Leader, I get to meet many of the organizers and staff of NYRR,” she says. She also checks in volunteers who’ve signed up and registers walk-ups.
“Volunteering with NYRR has given me opportunities to get out and do interesting things,” Joan says. “It’s also taken me to places in the five boroughs that I may never have thought of going to.”
