Dorothy Dollivar is Senior Volunteer of the Month April 2017
Celebrating almost 15 years of volunteering with NYRR, Dorothy Dollivar is being honored as the Senior Volunteer of the Month for NYRR’s Volunteer Appreciation Month.
Dollivar became involved with NYRR at the suggestion of her friend, Kay McDermott, a recreational walker and hiker. To stay fit, Dollivar joined McDermott in the Engineers' Gate Striders Walking Group, which meets twice a week at the East 90th Street entrance of Central Park.
Dollivar enjoys the health benefits of the group’s walks, but says that the people she has met are what she loves the most. “It is such an interesting, intelligent, and well-read group,” she says. “If you ever have any questions, someone in the group will probably know the answer.”
That camaraderie extends beyond the group’s weekly walks, as Dollivar notes, “People are interested in current events and do things together outside [of the group]; for example, if there is a free concert in the area, someone will let you know.”
“The nicest thing is the friendships that you make,“ she comments. “I came for exercise and ended up staying for group.“
