Weeknight Summer Fun in Central Park
Ah, summer in the city, when we spend warm, muggy days (and nights) longing to escape to the beach or the mountains. But for over 4,700 runners in Central Park on a sultry Thursday evening, summer in NYC was something to celebrate at the NYRR R-U-N 5K.
Held just 10 days after the NYRR Brooklyn R-U-N 5K (and in similarly steamy conditions), the race gave those finishers an opportunity to improve on their time. Regardless of their aspirations, everyone could enjoy lawn games, a photo booth, and post-race popsicles along with the usual water and bagels after their 3.1 over the park's rolling hills.
First across the finish line were John Campagna in 16:33 for the men and Esther Atkins of the New York Athletic Club in 18:09 for the women.
Given the opportunity midway through their race to vote with their feet for West Side or East Side, runners chose West Side by a large margin. No report on where the most spirited post-race celebrations took place, though finishers were invited to enjoy special deals at local spots.
