Runners Celebrate the Beautiful Game in the NYRR Virtual GOOAAALLL 5K

Runners Celebrate the Beautiful Game in the NYRR Virtual GOOAAALLL 5K

As several billion fans around the world cheered on their teams in the soccer/football extravaganza that wrapped up July 15, more than 2,750 people completed the NYRR Virtual GOOAAALLL 5K, each logging 3.1 miles (team jersey optional). Participants hailed from all 50 U.S. states plus Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and 74 different countries. That's a whopping 8,525 miles (13,750 kilometers) of running!

The finishers were a diverse group, ranging in age from 18 to 75 (the ages of the oldest and youngest participants of both genders), and comprising 61% men and 39% women. All five NYC boroughs had robust representation, from 331 finishers in Manhattan to 28 in Staten Island.

Some of the finishers, including Erik of Dalarna, Sweden, achieved two GOOAAALLLs: finishing this race as well as completing the NYRR Virtual 6 program to earn guaranteed entry to the 2019 Popular Brooklyn Half! Congratulations to Erik and all the Virtual 6 finishers.

The largest number of finishers—over 1,800—came from the USA. That may not be surprising, but it's noteworthy given that the U.S. team didn't even....never mind. The next four most-represented countries were the UK (178 finishers), Brazil (114), Canada (71), and Germany (59). Brazil’s finisher field included Marcelinho, who appears to have enjoyed his beachside jaunt near Sao Paulo. Parabéns, Marcelinho!

Russia had 38 finishers, France claimed 31, and Croatia had just one—perhaps not shocking in a nation of only 4 million people, though it’s worth noting that its star left-winger, Ivan Perisic, was reported to have covered more distance during the month-long tournament than any other player: 72.5 kilometers, or just over 45 miles! That’s about 14 and a half 5Ks and an impressive monthly total for any runner.

Though GOOAAALLL 5K participants may have tallied smaller totals, they showed great enthusiasm, even in sultry summer conditions. One finisher in Virginia had support on a steamy day from a four-footed friend.

Oh, it looks like at least one Virtual GOOAAALLL 5K participant (and former TCS New York City Marathon finisher) has a few claims to fame on the pitch in addition to his running accomplishments.

But regardless of their soccer prowess, participants shared a passion for both running and the beautiful game. Great job, all of our finishers, and may you continue to meet your GOOAAALLLs!
