Trails and Parks

While it's impossible to say which of New York and New Jersey's many parks and trails are the very best, we've gathered a short list of ones we think are definitely worth checking out. As a plus, they're all under an hour and a half away from NYC by car!

Located about an hour north of NYC (an hour and a half with traffic), Harriman State Park is New York's second-largest state park. Combined with Bear Mountain State Park, there are lakes, beaches, campsites, and over 230 miles of trails. Go out for a day trip and run some of New York's most beautiful trails, or turn your trip into a weekend getaway and camp out under the stars.

South Mountain Reservation

A hop and a skip away in Essex County, NJ, South Mountain Reservation is the largest nature preserve in the state with tons of excellent running and hiking trails. It contains vistas of five different cities, waterfalls, and 14 miles of trails to explore.

Rockefeller State Park

Tonight was more about the sunset than the running.

Only 30 miles north of NYC, Rockefeller State Park is filled with history, nature, and excellent trails. The trails are stone carriage roads that were laid out by John D. Rockefeller in the early 1900s. They're closed to vehicles of all kinds, making them very runner-friendly.

Boardwalks

Let's go to the beach! Boardwalk running is a great way to enjoy that sea air and give your legs a break from concrete in exchange for something softer. Here on the East Coast, there are some of the greatest boardwalks in the country, and many are within driving distance of NYC.
