It was a perfect day to run, walk, or simply bask in the sunshine as more than 7,800 people took part in the Run as One (4M) Presented by JPMorgan Chase this morning in Central Park. On the NYRR calendar since 2007, Run as One raises funding and awareness in the fight against lung cancer and is held in memory of former Chase Manhattan Bank chairman Tom Labrecque, a lifelong non-smoker who passed away from lung cancer in 2000 at age 62.

It was a day for family as friends as many ran or walked for loved ones who are battling lung cancer or in memory of those who have fought it. First across the finish line were Harbert Okuti in 19:12 and Askale Merachi in 21:34, both familiar faces at the front of NYRR races.

A post-race festival at Rumsey Playfield featured info on lung cancer awareness; with early detection, the disease is treatable. Tom Labrecque, Jr., a member of the NYRR Board of Directors, spoke to runners at the start and greeted them after the finish.

The festival also honored NYRR members who completed their 9+1 program requirements today for guaranteed entry to the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon; these runners got to ring a special bell. Congratulations!

Our racing calendar includes races of all distances, all over NYC, and you can sign up now for events taking place from now into the fall. Try the inaugural Italy Run by Ferrero (5M) on June 3, the NYRR New York Mini 10K on June 9, and many others!
