City's Top Clubs Compete in Central Park
Celebrating its 31st running, the NYRR Team Championships drew clubs from across the five boroughs and beyond to see who has the fastest team in town in 2017. The event called for a five miler in Central Park, just as it has every year since the first edition of the race in 1987. Check out our all-time winners list to see each year's individual and team champions, and read on to see who took the titles this year.
Pre-race, runners put their team spirit on display through social media, laying out their club's jersey, their race numbers, and more:
Some clubs even made an event of picking up their bibs and souvenir hats, meeting up on Friday night before stepping to the starting line together Saturday morning.
Are you ready for tomorrow!? We're pumped for 2017 Team Championship. Not the fastest running team out there but we'll give the best! Sleep tight y'all runners tonight and see you up and early morning rain or shine! 🏃🏻🏃🏻♀️💦🤞🏻 #NYRRTeamChamps #noregretSrunnerS #crewlove #runningculture #newyorkrunning #뉴욕 #러닝 #달리기 #같이의가치
After some stormy weather early on race morning, the course was cleared for runners and the morning of racing began, starting with the men. Breaking the tape in first there was Fikadu Girma Teferi of the West Side Runners, running 23:45.
Just about an hour later, in the women's race, it was Askale Merachi of Urban Athletics who earned the 2017 individual crown, winning in 27:17.
Once the results were completed and compiled, it was time to announce the team winners.
Placing seven runners in the top 10 overall, the West Side Runners took the men's open race, successfully defending their title from 2016.
The women's open race, in contrast, came down to just a 56-second difference between the top two teams, as the New York Athletic Club edged ahead of Central Park Track Club–New Balance. In a race that counts scores to the 10th runner, it appeared that every second counted this year as racers kicked down the finishing stretch.
However the race turned out, you can be sure that the day was all about putting in your best effort for the team, and then supporting your squad from the sidelines...
ALL DECKED OUT FOR #NYRRTEAMCHAMPS! Rockefeller Center's Christmas trees got nothing on me. So much fun to go to a race just to cheer 😆😆 Apparently, I wasn't embarrassing enough so I need to step up my game next time!
