Happy Birthday, NYRR Open Run
This month, NYRR Open Run turns two!
The program, a series of free weekly runs and walks in neighborhood parks across NYC, launched on June 1, 2015 with one location—St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx—and has since expanded to 13 parks across the five boroughs.
The community-based initiative relies on leaders from each park’s neighborhood to take ownership of the program, so every location has a group of five to eight committed volunteers that coordinates each week’s run.
Since 2016, 2,390 volunteers have helped facilitate an NYRR Open Run, and Open Run’s finish lines have been crossed 20,000 times.
To celebrate these runners and volunteers—and the dedication they’ve poured into an incredible year two—let’s look back at some highlights from the past 12 months.
