Hundreds of Kids Run the Boardwalk

Hundreds of Kids Run the Boardwalk

As the final finishers in the 2017 Airbnb Brooklyn Half made their way along the Coney Island boardwalk, hundreds of kids, ages 7-18, ran an out-and-back mile alongside them in the third-annual NYRR Youth Boardwalk Run at the Airbnb Brooklyn Half.

In the interest of safety—the boardwalk was slick with rain—NYRR staff members led the young runners at a moderate pace, with no results and no awards for the top finishers. But none of that dampened the enthusiasm of the kids and the NYRR youth programs coaches, parents, friends, volunteers, and other spectators who boisterously cheered them on. Every kid got a souvenir headband before the run, and all finishers received a medal.

Some participants had watched their parents finish the Airbnb Brooklyn Half and were proud and happy to share in celebration of family fitness.

Many of the kids were members of Young Runners and Mighty Milers teams and had been a part of other NYRR Youth Running Series events this year.

Since 1999 NYRR has provided accessible free running programs to kids locally and nationally, including more than 215,000 during the 2016-17 school year, the most ever. Starting with the 2017-18 school year, our youth programs have evolved into a single, comprehensive program, Rising New York Road Runners. Learn more at rising.nyrr.org.

Our next Youth Running Series event is coming up on June 10: the Girls' Run at the NYRR New York Mini 10K.
