A State-of-the-Art New Green Space for Youth and Community
What a difference a year can make.
In October 2016, New York Road Runners (NYRR) and The Trust for Public Land (TPL) joined students and administrators at C.S. 154 Harriet Tubman Learning Center in Harlem, and New York City officials to break ground for a new playground for students and the community.
Today, the new state-of-the-art green playground opened as part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, teachers, and administrators at C.S. 154 and the shared Democracy Prep Endurance Middle School; NYRR, TPL, and New York City Department of Environmental Protection and other city agency officials; and Rising New York Road Runners Ambassador & Special Advisor Jenny Simpson.
Before-and-after photos of the playground say it all. The new playground includes green infrastructure elements that will allow the space to capture almost 700,000 gallons of stormwater runoff each year, which will help the health of the Hudson River. The playground also operates as a public space for the community during weekends, holidays, and school vacations. It includes an all-weather track and a climbing wall.
This is the third and final site to open in 2017 through NYRR and the Trust for Public Land's first year of partnership. Earlier this year, refurbished playgrounds were opened at the Piagentini and Jones Educational Complex in Throgg's Neck, Bronx, and at P.S. 120 in Flushing, Queens, through NYRR's $1 million contribution to the organizations' shared commitment to provide New York City students and communities with beautiful outdoor spaces.
Simpson will be in town throughout TCS New York City Marathon week, taking part in events including the TCS Run with Champions on Friday at the marathon finish line in Central Park, and accompanying five Rising New York Road Runners—one from each borough—who will serve as TCS New York City Marathon Grand Marshals, riding in the lead vehicle on Sunday. Before today's ceremony she took part in a 1 for You 1 for Youth* New Balance shoe distribution to students.
"This is the happiest addition to my career so far," said Simpson of her involvement with Rising New York Road Runners. Simpson is a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist at 1500 meters and three-time IAAF World Championships medalist.
